By | September 5, 2024

The 2024 BMFA CL speed National Championships were once again held at the Barton Club site near Manchester on the 30th , 31st August and 1st September 2024.

Joe Gough flying Sport Jet

Competitors were arriving from Friday morning, the weather was good on all 3 days with better weather on the Friday and Saturday, competition flights started by around 1 PM on the Friday and a group of sport jet flights were made, mostly the speeds were in the high 130’s but two models flew in the 140’s with Barrie Lever making 146.7 which actually turned out to be the highest speed Sport Jet flight of the 3 day meeting.

Lever Sport Jet minus vertical fin, best speed 146.7mph

Peter Halman and Paul Eisner flew 12 class models and flew at around the record speed of 153.4 mph, in fact Paul’s best flight was an exact match of the record. Some laps that Paul and Peter recorded were up in the mid to high 150’s, so expect to see that 12 class record tumble at some stage soon.

Peter Halmans 12 speed model (ex F2A airframe)  Powered by Irvine (no surprise there!!).

F2A had 4 entries, although one of those entries was not able to record a single timed lap so therefore does not show on the results. Paul Eisner flew a very credible 301 Kph for the fastest F2A flight of the meeting.

Dave Brewins 2nd placed Irvine powered F2A model

The meeting was very well run by Dick Hart ably assisted by Christine Watson on TT timing and Joe Gough as general dogs body, additional thanks to the Barton Club for preparing the site to such a high standard.

We also discussed new competitors who are are coming into speed flying, we know of new Sport Jet competitors starting in the Southampton area and there are 4 or 5 12 class flyers building up to their first competition flights, we look forward to seeing these competitors in 2025.

All in all a great meeting.

About Barrie Lever

I am a committed competition modeller, flying RC pylon since 1978 and additionally control line since 2017, although I had held a latent interest in CL speed for decades. I like to make as much of my competition models myself as is possible, this often involves teaming up with other like minded competitors to share the workload.
