Buckminster Speed training day

Speedcom arranged the 2nd speed training day at Buckminster on the 25th March 2023, after last years event it was felt that it was worth running another speed training day.

However the 2023 event was not blessed with good weather, in fact, it was downright awful weather, with high winds and intermittent but heavy rain putting off any attempts at flying.

Nevertheless, a good number of people had turned up as there is a workshop/information sharing element to these training days, a number of people from beginners to former World Champions and World record holder, bought speed models and parts along for discussion and information exchange.

Paul Eisner bought along three distinct types of models these being current F2A models, a 0.12 class model and finally a vintage Pink Lady 2.5cc model. The Pink Lady is a replica of the model that the great Bill Wisnieski used to win the 1964 CL speed World Championship with, at the moment Pauls Pink Lady has a Rattler engine installed which of course was a period engine. However, Paul revealed that he may be making a replica of the Wisnieski WART engine which was the actual engine that Bill used to win that Championship with.

For the last year there has been a revival of the 0.12 class, this is a class with some restrictions in place to encourage new fliers or maybe even getting fliers out of retirement. There were a number of 12 models at the training day, all were powered by Irvine 15R’s sleeved down with the Irvine 12  replacement cylinder. Miles Patience had a nice new 12 model, and this should fly in the very near future, Miles model is an adapted F2A model, pretty well all new 12 class models are likely to be based on the Halman F2A model/pan setup.

Paul Eisner answered a lot of questions on his speed models in general and particularly the 12 class model, super silencer details were discussed and various silencers were shown, Paul discussed the length of the silencer and how F2A props are run with reduced diameter to work on the lower revving 12 engines.

Despite the weather stopping any flying taking place, the hanger meeting with information exchange made up for the lack of flying. It is very likely that this event will be run next year and maybe there can be a larger range of workshop activities.
